Eighth Summer Olympic Games, Amsterdam. Gymnastics and some athletics events are introduced as sports for women to compete in. Women make up 9.6% of total athletes. However, the Games are famous for female 800m runners collapsing through exhaustion upon completion of the race. The response by dominant figures was to question female ability to compete in races of such length. Subsequently, the content of such debates are used as a barrier against future participation in races over 800m until the 1960s.
