International Olympic Committee (IOC) Centennial Olympic ‘Congress of Unity’, Paris. ‘Women in sport’ receives noted mentions throughout. However Kari Fasting (a representative of European women and sport networks), who was in attendance, says it was very male-dominated and most of what was said about women was said by male journalists or male athletes. It is undetermined whether it is during this year or during this Congress that the IOC requests that the Olympic charter be revised to better encompass women and sport. In the final Congress Report, women are located under the sub-theme titled High-Level Competitive Sport and its Organisation (point 26 states that ‘women’s accession to positions as sports leaders must be encouraged and accelerated’). Additionally, under the Sport and the Mass Media theme, point 59 states ‘men’s and women’s performances should be given the same consideration and respect’.
