Second World Conference on Women and Sport, Windhoek, hosted by the International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG). Titled ‘Reaching Out for Change’, the conference pushed the idea that women in sport should learn of the work in other fields, such as health, education, and broader women’s development. This included stronger linkages to the United Nations (UN) Beijing Platform for Action (see 1995 Sep) and the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (UNCEDAW) reports. Reflections on the first World Conference (see 1994 May) and the global adoption of the Brighton Declaration also took place. The Conference output was the Windhoek Call for Action – aimed at turning the Brighton Declaration principles into action – and the International Women and Sport Strategy (1998-2002).
