Timeline
Tangentially following from discussions in 1963 in the Council of Europe, the Swedish government offered to organize a conference on ‘Sport and Women’ in Stockholm in October 1967. In November, 1966, a study group had met and information was disseminated to member countries in March 1967. The main aim, it was announced, was, as a first step, to study together the sociological facts leading to the participation or non-participation of women in sport, and as a second step, to outline methods and principles to encourage woman to practise sport, especially the age group between 17 and 25. In view of attendance, the conference held from 9-14 October 1967 can be considered a success. Nearly forty delegates, mostly female, from all twenty member countries plus Finland, travelled to Stockholm. They were mostly high school teachers, sport scientists and/or women working in sport federations or state departments. (p277-278) See 1969.
