The first World Conference on Women and Sport, Brighton, UK. It was titled ‘Women, Sport, and the Challenge of Change’, and was funded by the Great Britain Sport Council and supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It had been planned for nearly two years (see 1992 Nov; 1994 Feb) and approximately 280 delegates from over eighty countries attended. Reflections from the Conference reveal how women all over the world were experiencing similar issues in sport. An International Strategy for Women and Sport (1994-1998) was launched which was comprised of the Brighton Declaration on Women and Sport (a set of ten principles which when addressed would help to develop a sporting culture that enables and values the full involvement of women in every aspect of sport), international co-ordinating mechanisms, regular conferences, and a small working group (which was to become the International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG) – see 1994 Nov). The origins of the African Women in Sport Association (AWISA) can be traced to a meeting in Brighton, although AWISA was not officially launched until 1998.
