The Irish State Minister, Jim Tunney, proposed a motion calling for the greater involvement of women in sport on the occasion of the Second Conference of European Ministers for Sport in London. As a result, Ireland was entrusted with the organization of a seminar on this topic, held from 30 September to 3 October 1980 in Dublin. A new feature that had not been so present in the discussions of the Stockholm and Luxembourg conferences at the end of the 1960s (see entries at 1967 & 1969) was the emphasis on the social construction of gender differences in sport. An important recommendation on women’s leadership in sport was put forward. But on the Western European level of the Council of Europe, however, the topic then disappeared again for another nine years. (p285).
