The ‘showpiece’ event of the ‘golden age’ of motorsport for women occurs at Brooklands motor circuit involving Kay Petre and Gwenda Hawkes who were arguably the most famous female drivers of the period. Both reached speeds of 130 miles per hour. However, WWII closed Brooklands and was a major setback to women in motorsport in the UK.
