The UK government adopt the Brighton Declaration (see 1994 May). However, it is stated that ‘while the UK’s leadership on gender equity policy was extremely effective internationally, the Brighton Declaration was not welcomed by the government of the day in the UK. It was not until May 1998, on the eve of the second World Conference in Namibia, that the Labour government adopted it’.
